the bath, which can sit anywhere from two to 16 people. And the entire time, of course, you’re naked. And in public. It’s the stuff of classic nightmares come to life. Extended periods of public nakedness are difficult for even the most confident among us, but they are excruciating for those of us who, like me, would rather not show our bodies to anyone. By the time I got to the bath—like all ofuro, it was steamingly, almost unbearably hot, so hot that I had to inch into it lest I pass out—I was
simply women enjoying a bath together, and what we shared in that moment was the pleasure of being alive and of being fortunate enough to be sitting in that delicious heat and feeling the water on our skin. I nodded and smiled at the other women, and they nodded and smiled back. I don’t speak enough Japanese to say what I wanted to—“Oh, how wonderful this is; how lucky I am to feel this!”—but I didn’t think I needed to: We all of us already knew.
