And yet Japan is not a place where you see women walking around in crop tops and short shorts: There you express yourself by what you do wear, not by what you don’t. But there is one arena in which the Japanese shed all modesty, and that is the bath. As anyone who is familiar with the country knows,

the bath, which can sit anywhere from two to 16 people. And the entire time, of course, you’re naked. And in public. It’s the stuff of classic nightmares come to life. Extended periods of public nakedness are difficult for even the most confident among us, but they are excruciating for those of us who, like me, would rather not show our bodies to anyone.
